A Legacy of Passion and Progress: The Story of Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club

The story of Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club is one rooted in passion, community, and an enduring commitment to excellence. While the club was formally established in 1992, its origins trace back even further—into the vibrant atmosphere of St. Andrew’s Cathedral old church hall in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Humble Beginnings
As a young boy of just eleven years, I was captivated by the rhythmic “tick-tock” sound of a small white ball bouncing across a blue or green table. That simple yet mesmerizing sound drew me repeatedly to the church hall, where I spent hours collecting stray balls and closely observing the players.
Among the pioneers of the game were Paul Mutambuze, the late Bernard Nangombe, Tito, Michael, the late Sam Kasegu, Ofumbi, and Derrick Masaaba. Their dedication transformed the church hall into a lively hub of table tennis activity, especially during evenings and weekends. These early experiences laid the foundation for what would eventually become a lifelong journey in sports development.
Growth and Transformation (1992–2026)
Since its official founding in 1992, Mbale Tigers has grown into a dynamic and innovative sports institution, now proudly marking over three decades of existence. The club’s leadership has consistently embraced a pragmatic and forward-thinking approach, leveraging opportunities from government initiatives, the private sector, and international development partners.
Today, the club operates both an office and a fully functional training center, offering structured programs in table tennis and football. Through these programs, we provide systematic coaching in fundamental skills for children, juniors, and senior players alike.
We also actively participate in global sporting events, including the annual celebration of World Table Tennis Day on April 23, reinforcing our connection to the international sporting community.
Empowering Beyond Sport
Mbale Tigers is not just about athletic excellence—it is equally committed to social development. The club fosters essential life skills among its members and works to secure bursaries and scholarships for students at primary, secondary, tertiary, and university levels.
Our human resource base is one of our greatest strengths. Members bring expertise from diverse professional fields such as administration, healthcare, ICT, banking, and finance. Many are actively engaged in public service across district, sub-county, and parish levels, further strengthening the club’s community impact.
Leadership and Excellence
The club’s success is underpinned by a dedicated board of experienced volunteers who work tirelessly to realize its vision and mission. Through strategic planning and clearly defined objectives, Mbale Tigers has evolved into a leading community sports organization, setting benchmarks that rival and often surpass other clubs in Uganda.
This excellence has not only elevated the club locally but has also attracted participation and recognition from across East Africa.
Global Reach and Partnerships
Mbale Tigers has built strong relationships with international sports bodies such as the International Table Tennis Federation and the International Olympic Committee. These partnerships, alongside collaborations with countries like Sweden and Japan, have significantly contributed to the club’s development.
Additionally, the club is proudly represented by ambassadors across the globe, including in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Dubai, Australia, and France. These ambassadors play a vital role in promoting the club’s achievements and expanding its international footprint.
Competing on the World Stage
Over the years, Mbale Tigers has actively participated in competitions at national, East African, and continental levels. The club has also been involved in Commonwealth and global events, as well as International Olympic Committee youth programs, academic opportunities, and Olympic qualification pathways.
Looking Ahead
From the echoing halls of St. Andrew’s Cathedral to the global sporting arena, Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club stands as a testament to vision, perseverance, and community spirit. As we continue to grow, our mission remains clear: to nurture talent, empower communities, and elevate the game of table tennis both locally and internationally.
