The story of Para Table Tennis in Uganda cannot be told without mentioning the pioneering role played by Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club. What began as a bold idea in 2007 has grown into a powerful movement promoting inclusion, opportunity, and international representation for persons living with disabilities.
The Beginning of an Inclusive Vision
In 2007, the Director of Mbale Tigers took a significant step toward inclusive sports development after being elected President of the Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA). Recognizing the importance of making sports accessible to everyone, he initiated Para Table Tennis activities at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala.
As a practical demonstration of inclusion, one table tennis table and the necessary equipment were dedicated specifically for persons living with disabilities. This simple but visionary action created a space where athletes with disabilities could train, compete, and become part of the wider table tennis community.
The initiative reflected the universal principle that sports belong to everyone.
The First Competition: A Historic Moment
The newly formed Para Table Tennis team soon stepped into the spotlight. They participated in their first-ever competition during the NSSF Open Tournament, marking a historic moment for the sport in Uganda.
Their participation was more than a competition—it was a powerful message to the sporting world about universality, equality, and inclusion in sports. For the first time, athletes with disabilities competed alongside other players in a national tournament setting.
Early Champions and Rising Talent
Among the early players who stood out was Kato, who emerged as the best player during the early years of Para Table Tennis competitions. His performance demonstrated that talent and determination can thrive when opportunities are created.
Over time, the program continued to produce talented athletes who carried the Mbale Tigers spirit onto bigger stages.
One such athlete is Dennis, who has proudly represented Uganda in international competitions, including events held in Argentina. His achievements symbolize the progress made since the humble beginnings of the Para Table Tennis initiative.
A Global Footprint
The impact of the program has also extended beyond Uganda’s borders. Khamuka Khadija, one of the players who trained within the Mbale Tigers environment, is now based in France, continuing to build her life and career abroad.
Another key figure is Uthman, who has transitioned from player to coach and now contributes to the development of new athletes as a coach at Mbale Tigers. His journey reflects the club’s commitment to nurturing not only players but also future leaders in sports.
A Legacy of Inclusion
The establishment of Para Table Tennis at Lugogo Indoor Stadium in 2007 was more than a sports initiative—it was the beginning of a movement that proved sports can transform lives when barriers are removed.
Through dedication, vision, and commitment to inclusion, Mbale Tigers helped open doors for athletes with disabilities to compete, grow, and represent their country with pride.
Today, the legacy continues as Mbale Tigers works toward expanding opportunities for all athletes, reinforcing the belief that table tennis is truly a sport for everyone.
