From humble beginnings in 1992 to becoming a nationally and internationally recognized community sports powerhouse, Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club has proudly celebrated 30 years of impactful existence in grand style. The week-long celebrations held from 6th–12th November 2023 at Mbale Courts View Hotel, Maluku Community Grounds, and Mbale Cricket Grounds were nothing short of historic.
A Celebration Rooted in Legacy and Vision
Founded in 1992, Mbale Tigers has grown from a local sports initiative into a registered Non-Profit organization and now an Investment Club banking with DFCU. With offices in Maluku Industrial Division and a training centre at Namakwekwe Community Centre in Northern Division, the club has consistently championed youth empowerment through sport.
The 30-year milestone was organized by a dedicated Board and Organizing Committee led by Executive Director and Chairman Matsyetsye Emmanuel Koboyi, alongside Director of Finance Henry Makabayi, Board Secretary Waswa Masokoyi, Founder Member Nalyanya Henry, and players’ representative Ludia Natunga. Their leadership ensured that the celebration reflected the club’s remarkable journey.
The Mega Tournament: A Showcase of Talent
At the heart of the celebrations was the Mega Table Tennis Tournament, expertly coordinated by a technical committee led by Tournament Manager Matsyetsye Emmanuel Koboyi, Tournament Director Mutete Jude, Referee Andira Ronnie, and Chief Umpire Duncho.
The tournament brought together players across multiple categories:
- Cadets
- Juniors
- Seniors
- Masters
- Veterans
- Para Players
- Parkinson Category
This inclusive competition highlighted the club’s commitment to accessibility and equal opportunity in sports.
Reuniting Generations
One of the core objectives of the celebration was reuniting original and current members. Former players, employees, and founding members stood side by side with current athletes, sharing stories, laughter, and memories. The Photo Gallery exhibition beautifully captured the club’s evolution — from early tournaments to international recognition.
Parents, sponsors, schools, and community clubs such as Buchunya Women Farmers Group and Bumasata Community Development Association joined in, reinforcing the club’s deep roots within Mbale City.
A Night of Glamour and Recognition
The grand Awarding Ceremony was presided over by Dr. Ogwel, representing the Minister of Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang. The evening sparkled with appreciation for players, staff, development partners, and long-standing supporters.
Institutions including Bank of Uganda, Stanbic Bank, Mogas Oil, Mbale City, UCC, and SIDA (through TWIGA and Forum Syd) were recognized for their financial and material support.
Special tribute was paid to:
- Stefan Laupa and Joel Luning for introducing transformative research on the impact of table tennis on leadership among children.
- Ambassador Oliva Wonekha for inspiring the development path through sports.
- Makabayi Henry for unwavering financial commitment.
- Matsyetsye Emmanuel Koboyi for engineering and sustaining the club’s existence for three decades.
International Recognition and Impact
Mbale Tigers’ story extends beyond Uganda. Between 2003 and 2023, the club received recognition and support from global institutions including:
- International Table Tennis Federation
- International Olympic Committee
- UN Habitat
- UNICEF
- World Vision
Notably, the club’s model was recommended for replication in East Africa under the MILGAP program. Its work integrating Millennium Development Goals — fighting HIV/AIDS, promoting leadership, gender equality, environmental awareness, and education — transformed countless young lives.
Staff capacity building has also been international:
- Mutete Jude trained as an Expert Level II Coach in Germany at Leipzig University.
- Mercy Nabisano was recently admitted to Leipzig University for Level II Coaching.
- Matsyetsye Emmanuel Koboyi trained in Greece at the International Olympic Academy under Peloponnese University.
These milestones reflect a club that thinks globally while acting locally.
A March Through the City
In one of the most symbolic moments of the celebrations, a brass band led players, fans, sponsors, and schools in a colorful march from Mbale Courts View Hotel through Mbale City to the Mbale Tigers office in Maluku and back. The procession created public awareness and rallied support for the club’s next ambitious dream — constructing a permanent Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Academy.
Looking Ahead: Building the Academy
While the planned Academy Run was postponed due to logistical challenges, preparations continue to secure land opposite Bungokho Primary School in Bungokho Constituency for the construction of a state-of-the-art Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Academy.
This Academy represents the future — a self-sustaining centre that will nurture the next generation of champions and leaders.
Gratitude and Determination
The celebrations were a testament to what community, passion, and resilience can achieve. Despite outstanding balances and financial deficits, the spirit of solidarity from sponsors, volunteers, institutions, and individuals demonstrates unwavering belief in the Mbale Tigers vision.
Thirty years ago, a dream was born. Today, that dream roars louder than ever.
Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club is not just celebrating a milestone — it is reaffirming a mission: empowering youth, promoting excellence, and building champions for life.
Here’s to the next 30 years of impact.
