Promoting Inclusion Through Sport

Paralympic Table Tennis is an important part of the inclusive sports
development efforts supported by Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club. The
initiative aims to ensure that persons living with disabilities have equal
opportunities to participate in sports, develop their talents, and represent
their communities and country in competitive events
.

Through this program, Mbale Tigers continues to demonstrate that table
tennis is a sport for everyone regardless of physical ability. The club
strongly believes that sports can empower individuals, promote confidence, and
break barriers within society.

The Beginning of Para Table Tennis in
Uganda

The growth of Paralympic Table Tennis in Uganda can be traced back to 2007,
when the Director of Mbale Tigers was elected President of the Uganda Table
Tennis Association (UTTA).

Recognizing the need to include persons living with disabilities in
sports, he initiated Para Table Tennis activities at Lugogo Indoor Stadium
in Kampala. As part of this effort, one table tennis table and the necessary
equipment were specifically dedicated to athletes with disabilities
,
creating a space where they could train and participate in competitive sport.

This initiative marked an important milestone in the development of inclusive
table tennis in Uganda
.

The First Historic Competition

After the establishment of the program, the Para Table Tennis team soon
had the opportunity to compete at a national level. Their first-ever
competition took place during the NSSF Open Tournament
, where they
showcased their skills and demonstrated the universal nature of sport.

Their participation was significant because it promoted the principles
of universality and inclusion
, showing that athletes with disabilities
could compete alongside other players and be part of the national sports
community.

Early Champions and Pioneers

Among the early players who participated in the Para Table Tennis program
was Kato, who emerged as one of the best performers during the early
competitions. His success inspired many other players and helped build
confidence in the program.

Over the years, more athletes joined the initiative, strengthening the
presence of Paralympic Table Tennis within the Mbale Tigers sports development
framework.

International Representation

One of the major achievements of the program has been the emergence of
athletes who have represented Uganda internationally.

Dennis, a talented Para Table Tennis player, has proudly represented Uganda in
international competitions, including events held in Argentina. His
participation on the global stage reflects the progress made by the program
since its establishment.

Success Stories from the Program

The Paralympic Table Tennis initiative has also produced individuals who
have continued to contribute to sports in different ways.

  • Khamuka Khadija – A former
player who is now based in France, representing the international
reach and impact of the program.
  • Uthman – A former
player who has transitioned into a coach at Mbale Tigers, helping
train and mentor the next generation of athletes.

These stories demonstrate how sports programs can transform lives and
create opportunities beyond competition.

The Future of Paralympic Table Tennis
at Mbale Tigers

Mbale Tigers remains committed to expanding opportunities for persons
living with disabilities through sports. As the club continues its strategic
transformation and development programs
, Paralympic Table Tennis will
remain a key component of its mission to inspire, influence, and innovate
sports initiatives in the community.

Through training programs, competitions, and partnerships with national
and international sporting bodies, Mbale Tigers hopes to develop more
Paralympic athletes capable of representing Uganda on the world stage
.

Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club continues to champion the belief that
ability matters more than disability, and that sports can unite people
while creating opportunities for everyone to succeed.
